Bounty hunter Ben Brigade (Randolph Scott) has captured the killer Billy John (James Best) and is taking him to Vera Cruz to face the gallows. On his way, Brigade stops at a remote stage station, where he rescues the station master’s wife (Karen Steele) from an Indian raid. With danger closing in, he resumes his journey accompanied by two outlaws who offer their help—but secretly plan to claim Billy for themselves in hopes of earning a pardon. Meanwhile, Frank (Lee Van Cleef), Billy’s ruthless brother and the man responsible for Brigade’s personal tragedy, is closing in from behind.
